The Sortition Foundation
The Sortition Foundation is a not-for-profit company that promotes the use of Citizens' Assemblies in political decision-making, and specialises in recruiting random and representative samples of people for Citizens' Assemblies and the like. Our aim is to ensure that the recruitment method used for Citizens' Assemblies is as transparent and as legitimate as possible, and that we get as close as we can to the ideal of every person in a community (in this case Scotland) having an equal probability of receiving an invitation to take part, and that the final selection of the assembly participants is as fair as possible.
Dr Brett Hennig co-founded and is a director of the Sortition Foundation, which has recruited for over 30 deliberative mini-public events, and Brett has also given many public talks around the world on sortition and citizens’ assemblies. He is also on the Coordinating Committee of the Democracy R&D international network of deliberative democracy practitioners and researchers and has worked with and assisted the Parliament of Eastern Belgium (“Ostbelgien”) in the institutionalisation of a permanent citizens’ assembly.
